Introduction

The Bridging Project is working to improve engagement and outcomes for low income and first generation undergraduates at UK universities. This privacy notice is designed to help you understand how we will process any personal data that we collect about you.

The type of personal information we collect 

Student Data

We collect a range of personal and some sensitive data on students. This includes:

  • Gender you identify as, contact details, nationality, DOB, disability disclosures, family income, data on FSM/PP/Bursary support, current school, university choices, grades, degree choices and families history of university access.

  • This information has been carefully selected as it is an important part of measuring our work and success and ensuring the correct support is provided to students.

Volunteer Data

We collect data from our volunteers including:

  • Name, gender you identify as, contact details, nationality, disability disclosures, DOB, previous eligibility for FSM/PP/bursary support when they were at school, city they live in, university, degree title, degree classification, current role, coaching experience and families history of university access.

  • This data is collected to give us a clear understanding about the eligibility of the role and also to help us provide students with coaches with lived experience where requested.

How we get the personal information and why we have it

Most of the personal information we process is provided to us directly by you for one of the following reasons:

  • Student Data – to allow us to recruit and support students most in need of our help. To allow us to monitor students and their progress. 

  • Volunteer Data – to help us in recruiting our volunteers, to allow us to match up our coaches and coaches appropriately. 

  • Staff – to allow us to recruit and hire staff

We also receive personal information indirectly, from the following sources in the following scenarios:

  • Directly from schools or universities that we are partnered with

  • We collect the same data from schools and universities that we would collect from students. Students are giving permission for this data to be shared with us when signing up to the programme

  • We will share some of our insights and data with our partners and schools as part of our monitoring and evaluation.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:

  1. Your consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting info@thebridgingproject.co.uk

  2. We have a contractual obligation.

  3. We have a legal obligation.

  4. We have a vital interest.

  5. We need it to perform a public task.

  6. We have a legitimate interest.

How we store your personal information 

Data on students is stored for the duration of their time at university and one year beyond. This is on average 4 years in total but may be longer in some cases. This is to allow us to follow up with students and measure the impact of our work on you throughout your university course.

Our volunteer data is stored for the duration of the time they volunteer with us and up to 6 months after they leave.

Data will then be removed from our systems.

Your data protection rights

Under data protection law, you have rights including:

Your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information. 

Your right to rectification - You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete. 

Your right to erasure - You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances. 

Your right to restriction of processing - You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances. 

Your right to object to processing - You have the the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.

Your right to data portability - You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
